Spring Training for Rookies

On June 8-9, 2011, 48 relatively new financial aid officers met at SLGFA's corporate office to attend "Spring Training for Rookies," a collaborative training effort presented by Arkansas Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (AASFAA) and SLGFA. The participants' experience levels ranged from three years or less to less than one month.

Veterans in the field of financial aid taught sessions on:

  • Student Eligibility
  • Satisfactory Academic Progress
  • Federal Methodology
  • Title IV Programs such as Pell Grants, Campus-Based Aid, and Loans
  • Verification
  • Professional Judgment
  • Resources
  • Return of Title IV Funds Calculations

AASFAA and SLGFA collaborated on this training initiative to bring training to Arkansas' newest financial aid officers at no charge. Trainers who represented AASFAA were:  AASFAA President Bronwyn Sneed, AASFAA President-Elect Kattie Wing, AASFAA Treasurer Alan Pixley, Ex-officio Executive Council Member Michelle Cordell, and Former AASFAA Presidents John Jefferson and Karen Hulsey. Representing SLGFA were members of the Training & Technical Assistance Department, Clay Berry, Pamela Baker, Bonnie Hartz, Karen Williams, Rita Toland, and Becky Collins.

The training included a fun night at Dickey-Stephens Park where the Arkansas Travelers played Northwest Arkansas in a double header.
